It's the movement of Neil's hand that catches his attention, that really makes him see. He's spent so much time looking at Neil--him and the memories he carries around with him--and he knows Neil's movements, the turn of his hands, set of his shoulders, gait, cant of hips, arch of spine. And he knows what this means.
